Chatting with Celebrities: An Entertainment Journalist’s Take on the Stars
Celebrity Interviewer Chronicles Career in New Book
Barry Krutchik has transformed decades of interviews with celebrities into a captivating new book titled “Classic Conversations: ’90s Hip Hop & R&B.” Originating from a trove of memorable exchanges, the project blossomed during the pandemic, a time that allowed Krutchik to reflect on his unique experiences in the entertainment industry.
Krutchik’s journey began far from the limelight, growing up in North Miami Beach, Florida, and later moving to Los Angeles with aspirations of becoming a screenwriter. He soon found himself redirected by opportunity when a chance encounter at Mom’s Saloon in Brentwood led him to HITS Magazine, where he was hired for the marketing department. "I was the only one there with a college degree," he recalled, noting the creative atmosphere filled with aspiring musicians in the late ’80s.
His career kicked into high gear as celebrities began visiting the HITS office, bringing childhood dreams closer to reality. A pivotal moment arrived when a friend offered him a position at a small production company, allowing him to conduct interviews with high-profile artists for syndicated radio programming. "I interviewed Martha Reeves, Little Richard, and Stevie Wonder," he said. "It was crazy, fun, and a learning experience."
Krutchik attributes his passion for music and film to his parents. "My mother had such a passion for music that indirectly it must have been instilled in me," he shared. He has since held prominent positions in the industry, including serving as the head of talent relations for Premiere Radio, and has been a founding member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association.
After years of booking interviews rather than conducting them, Krutchik made a notable return to the scene with a request to interview Lady Gaga. Reflecting on the experience, he remarked, “It was like riding a bike.” Their conversation was engaging, punctuated with laughter and emotion.
As he delved into digitizing his extensive collection of interviews during the pandemic, Krutchik felt compelled to share these conversations. “I’m sitting on gold. People should hear this,” he remarked, highlighting the insights and stories captured within. His archives contain interviews with a plethora of artists, including TLC and Jay-Z, alongside lesser-known acts, showcasing the breadth of talent that often goes unrecognized.
The release of “Classic Conversations: ’90s Hip Hop & R&B” in 2025 not only marks a high point in Krutchik’s career but also serves as a retrospective of a vibrant era in music. Furthermore, he is leveraging his YouTube channel to share interviews with stars like Paris Hilton and Marilyn Manson, continuing to connect with audiences through his rich history in the entertainment world.
With plans for future projects, including a potential book focused on guitar legends such as Eddie Van Halen and Peter Frampton, Krutchik shows no signs of slowing down. "I don’t think classic conversations is going away," he affirmed, embracing the stories and connections that have punctuated his life in entertainment.
