Channel 4 Set to Announce New CEO Soon as Netflix Executive Steps Away
EXCLUSIVE UPDATE: Emma Lloyd, Netflix’s Vice President of Partnerships for EMEA, has withdrawn from the recruitment process for the CEO position at Channel 4. The move comes as she was widely regarded as a leading candidate for the role, which holds significant prestige in British television. Lloyd has opted to remain with the streaming platform.
PREVIOUS EXCLUSIVE – 1:20 AM PST: Nearly eight months after Alex Mahon stepped down as Channel 4’s CEO, the UK network appears to be on the verge of selecting its new leader.
Two primary candidates have emerged: Jonathan Allan, Channel 4’s Chief Operating Officer and interim CEO, and Emma Lloyd. Another contender, former BritBox CEO Reemah Sakaan, has also been mentioned in discussions surrounding the recruitment.
Sources indicate divided opinions on who will ultimately secure the role, reflecting the tightly controlled nature of the selection process. “It’s been such a closely-guarded secret,” remarked one insider.
Allan confirmed his candidacy at the RTS Cambridge Convention, responding affirmatively when asked if he was in the running. Having been in consideration since the beginning, his name has consistently surfaced in discussions.
Lloyd, whose name was first mentioned in a Sky News article ten days ago, has surprised many in the industry. She has been with Netflix for four years and previously spent 13 years at Sky, where she ascended to Chief Business Development Officer.
There may be additional candidates from outside the television sector. Paramount UK’s Chief Sarah Rose had been considered for the position but is leaving to lead a charitable foundation associated with Prince William and Kate Middleton.
The announcement of Channel 4’s new CEO is expected to be a focal point during the network’s annual gathering with suppliers later today. Ian Katz, the Head of Content, has previously indicated uncertainty about his future amid these leadership changes.
In a reflection of the cyclical nature of the UK television industry, Alex Mahon has been mentioned as a potential successor to Tim Davie as BBC Director General, a position with an application deadline at the end of the month.
Channel 4 has not provided a comment on the ongoing recruitment process.
