Cement Truck Overturns on 5 Freeway Near Boyle Heights, SigAlert Issued
Cement Truck Overturns on Northbound 5 Freeway, Prompting Extended SigAlert
A SigAlert has been issued in Boyle Heights following the overturn of a cement truck on the northbound 5 Freeway. The vehicle remains precariously positioned, teetering halfway over the edge of the freeway.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the cement-laden truck began leaking concrete upon crashing on Saturday. Officials have reported that it is currently over the K-rail and is unsecured, posing a threat to the 10 Freeway and the train tracks located below.
Efforts are underway to stabilize the truck and secure the area. The driver was safely removed from the vehicle and assessed by paramedics on-site; however, it remains unclear whether the driver sustained any injuries from the incident.
As of now, details regarding the cause of the truck’s overturning are still being investigated. The CHP has extended the SigAlert until 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. As a result, only one lane of the northbound 5 Freeway is open, and access from the westbound 10 Freeway to the 5 Freeway is currently closed.
Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes while crews work to address the situation.
