Cavaliers Dominate Lakers, Spoiling LeBron James’ Return to Cleveland
In a commanding performance, the Cleveland Cavaliers triumphed over the Los Angeles Lakers 129-99, effectively disrupting LeBron James’ return to Northeast Ohio. Donovan Mitchell led the Cavaliers with 25 points, while Jaylon Tyson contributed 20 points to the team’s victory.
De’Andre Hunter chipped in with 19 points, and Jarrett Allen secured 17 points along with nine rebounds, helping Cleveland notch its fifth consecutive win—a season best.
James struggled offensively, scoring just 11 points, marking the first time in 13 games as a visiting player in Cleveland that he failed to reach 20 points. The 41-year-old Akron native shot 3 of 10 from the field, failing to connect on any of his three 3-point attempts, and made 5 of 6 free throws during 27 minutes of action. This loss also represents James’ most significant defeat in Cleveland as a visiting player, bringing his record there to 10-3 despite two recent losses.
An emotional moment occurred during a timeout in the first quarter when highlights played of James scoring 25 consecutive points in Game 5 of the 2007 Eastern Conference Finals against the Detroit Pistons. The sight brought tears to his eyes with 7:46 left in the quarter.
Luka Doncic led the Lakers with 29 points, but the team’s record fell to 3-2 on their seven-game road trip. Doncic briefly exited the game in the first quarter after twisting his left ankle while attempting a 3-pointer.
The Cavaliers entered halftime with a narrow lead of 57-55. However, they seized control in the third quarter, outscoring the Lakers by 20 points (42-22). During a pivotal stretch, the Cavaliers went on a 25-8 run, with Mitchell scoring eight points and Tyson adding seven.
Although Cleveland struggled with their 3-point shooting in the first half, hitting only 6 of 22 attempts, they rebounded in the third quarter, sinking 7 of 11. The team also performed admirably from the field, making 17 of 25 shots in that period.
