Catherine O’Hara’s Last Red Carpet Event Just Four Months Before Her Passing at 71
Catherine O’Hara, the esteemed star of Schitt’s Creek, made her final red carpet appearance at the 2025 Emmy Awards prior to her passing at the age of 71. Known for her remarkable talent and engaging presence, O’Hara attended the event with her husband, Bo Welch, captivating audiences in a custom Dior gown.
Her last public appearance took place at the Emmys just four months before her death on January 30, reported to be due to a "brief illness." O’Hara’s gown, selected for the ceremony, showcased understated elegance, featuring three-quarter-length sleeves, a subtly bejeweled neckline, and voluminous ruffles cascading down either side of her floor-length skirt. At the ceremony, she received the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress for her role in Apple TV’s The Studio.
O’Hara’s death was initially reported by TMZ, and a representative later confirmed the details to various outlets, noting she passed away at her Los Angeles home. She is survived by Welch and their two adult children, Matthew, 32, and Luke, 29. In a 2020 interview, O’Hara highlighted the importance of motherhood in her life, stating, "one of the most important roles in life" was being a parent.
In an August 2019 interview with 519 Magazine, O’Hara emphasized the priority of family in her life and career choices. “I’ve always…In deciding what work I might get involved in for my whole working life, my family’s always come first,” she asserted, reiterating her commitment to being present for her children.
Following her poignant appearance at the Emmys, O’Hara did not attend subsequent events, including the 2026 Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globe Awards. As of now, her family has not issued an official statement following her passing.
