Comedy Icon Catherine O’Hara Passes Away at 71
Catherine O’Hara, a beloved figure in the comedy world, has died at the age of 71. Her manager confirmed the news on Friday, January 30. O’Hara was renowned for her performances in classic films such as Beetlejuice and Home Alone, as well as in Christopher Guest’s mockumentaries like Best in Show. She is survived by her husband and children.
O’Hara’s death comes as a significant loss to fans and colleagues alike. TMZ was the first to report on the passing of the Schitt’s Creek star, prompting heartfelt tributes from across the entertainment industry.
Born in Toronto in 1954, O’Hara was the second youngest of seven children. Her father worked with the Canadian Pacific Railway while her mother was a real estate agent. O’Hara’s journey in acting began as a young girl when she portrayed the Virgin Mary in a Nativity play. She later found a job as a waitress at Second City Theater, a stepping stone in her illustrious career.
“I was lucky enough to watch everybody,” O’Hara remarked in a 2024 interview about the legendary talent at Second City, which included figures like Dan Aykroyd and Joe Flaherty. Despite an initial setback during her audition, where she received discouraging feedback, she persevered and eventually joined the troupe.
O’Hara’s impactful career took flight in 1976 with the launch of Second City Television (SCTV), where she became known for her celebrity impressions and original characters, earning her five Emmy nominations, including one win. She later turned down a chance to appear on Saturday Night Live to stick with SCTV, a decision she later reflected on with appreciation.
In 1990, she starred as the frantic mother in Home Alone, a role that further cemented her status as a cultural icon. "It’s a perfect movie, isn’t it?" she said, recalling the experience. She reprised the role in the sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.
O’Hara’s vibrant career continued into the 1990s and 2000s, with notable roles in The Nightmare Before Christmas, Waiting for Guffman, and Schitt’s Creek, for which she received multiple awards, including an Emmy in 2020 for her portrayal of Moira Rose. In her acceptance speech, she expressed gratitude for the opportunity to portray a woman of her age who could fully embrace her identity.
In her personal life, O’Hara was married to Bo Welch, whom she met while filming Beetlejuice. The couple shared two sons, Matthew and Luke. "People always say, ‘Communicate,’ right? ‘Tell them how you’re feeling.’ We do a lot of it with jokes," she said in a 2024 interview about their marriage.
Catherine O’Hara’s legacy as a groundbreaking actress and comedian will undoubtedly endure, leaving a lasting imprint on the industry and its audiences.
