Carolyn Bessette Kennedy Considered a Big Hair Change Just Days Before Her Wedding to JFK Jr., Says Colorist
Days before her wedding to John F. Kennedy Jr., Carolyn Bessette Kennedy was on the verge of making a major change to her iconic style. Known for her chic and minimalist wardrobe, the late fashion publicist had built her career at Calvin Klein, captivating admirers with her striking beauty.
Brad Johns, her long-time hair colorist and close friend, describes the moment she expressed her desire for a dramatic hair transformation. “She came in a nervous wreck and she said, ‘I have something very special coming up. Dye my hair black,’” Johns recalls. His immediate response was firm: “Absolutely not.” He was committed to preserving her signature look and advised against any drastic changes. Instead, he encouraged those wishing for a new image to try a wig.
Despite her initial desire for a dramatic change, the final results proved to be a successful homage to her classic aesthetic. “I said to her, ‘Thank God I left those pieces in the front because you look like a princess,’” Johns recalls. Just days after their appointment, Bessette Kennedy and JFK Jr. were married in a secret ceremony in Georgia, marking the beginning of a new chapter in their lives.
