Carey Mulligan and Oscar Isaac Share Insights on Crafting Their Season 2 Fight Scene: A Journey of Teamwork
As the highly anticipated Season 2 of Beef launches on Netflix, viewers can expect another intense confrontation between its characters. Stars Carey Mulligan and Oscar Isaac shared insights at the premiere event in Los Angeles, highlighting their approach to a pivotal fight scene in the first episode.
Mulligan, who portrays Lindsay Crane-Martín, described the scene as a complex puzzle that required extensive collaboration with creator Lee Sung Jin over several months. “The fight scene was a big old puzzle that we took a long time to figure out with Sonny,” she said.
Isaac, who plays her husband Josh, elaborated on their preparation: “We did improvisations, we did rehearsals where we taped out the thing, almost like a theater play.”
Mulligan emphasized the scene’s significance, noting, “Because it was the inciting incident for the season, the onus was on it being very truthful.” She acknowledged the challenge of defining the characters as they navigated their conflict. “We also didn’t know who these people were, so it was hard to figure out how to make people listen to two people who are just fighting.” She praised Sonny’s adaptability and skill as a writer for making the scene work effectively.
Inspired by Lee’s own experience with road rage, the first season of Beef starred Steven Yeun and Ali Wong as two strangers whose lives intertwine after a traffic incident. The series received critical acclaim, earning four Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, and three Golden Globes, including Best Limited or Anthology Series or Television Film.
