Cannes 2026 Poster Embraces a Nostalgic Touch with ‘Thelma & Louise’
Cannes Film Festival Unveils 2026 Poster Featuring Iconic Duo from Thelma & Louise
The Cannes Film Festival has released the key art for its 79th edition, showcasing a striking image of Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon in character from the acclaimed film Thelma & Louise. This iconic black-and-white photograph captures the duo looking outward from a 1966 T-Bird, aptly complemented by Thelma’s pistol tucked in her back pocket.
The press notes emphasize the cultural significance of Davis and Sarandon’s characters, describing them as "unforgettable fighters" who challenged gender stereotypes both in society and cinema. Their portrayal represents ideals of freedom and friendship, highlighting the journey toward liberation—a reflection on the past while acknowledging the road ahead.
Directed by Ridley Scott, Thelma & Louise follows the adventures of two friends who embark on a road trip after Louise (Sarandon) kills a man who assaults Thelma (Davis) outside a bar. The film is notable for its groundbreaking narrative as the first female-led feminist road movie, culminating in a dramatic finale at the Grand Canyon.
Originally screening Out of Competition at Cannes, Thelma & Louise became a box office success, earning six Academy Award nominations, including Best Actress for both leads and winning Best Original Screenplay for Callie Khouri. The film also featured performances from Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen, Christopher McDonald, and a noteworthy breakout role by Brad Pitt.
The 2026 Cannes Film Festival is scheduled to take place from May 12 to May 23 in the picturesque French resort city. Below are images of the poster releases:
