Bulgaria Celebrates Its First-Ever Eurovision Song Contest Win
Europe’s most prestigious music event has announced its 2026 champion.
Bulgaria’s Dara secured victory in the Eurovision Song Contest held on Saturday in Vienna, Austria, with her infectious tune “Bangaranga.” This marks Bulgaria’s first win at the contest, earning an impressive total of 516 votes and surpassing all competitors on the leader board.
The win came as a surprise, especially considering Bulgaria’s best previous finish was second place in 2017, achieved by Kristian Kostov with “Beautiful Mess.”
The 2026 contest celebrated its 70th anniversary in front of a live audience of 10,000 at the Wiener Stadthalle, alongside millions of viewers watching from home.
This year’s Eurovision was not without its controversies. Several countries, including Ireland, Iceland, the Netherlands, Slovenia, and Spain, chose to boycott the event in protest of Israel’s participation.

Noam Bettan, representing Israel, finished in second place. His performance was met with a mix of support and dissent; although some fans waved flags in his honor, his total score of 343 drew boos from sections of the audience. BBC presenter Graham Norton remarked on the “strong reaction” observed in the hall.
The UK entry, performed by Sam Battle with the song “Eins, Zwei, Drei,” finished last, receiving only a single point.
With hosts Victoria Swarovski and Michael Ostrowski at the helm, Austria took on the responsibility of hosting after JJ won the previous year’s contest in Basel with “Wasted Love.” This year marked Austria’s first hosting since 2015, following the celebrated victory of Conchita Wurst.
