- Broadway Husbands influencer Bret Hanna-Shuford — also an actor known for roles in Wicked, Beauty and the Beast, and The Little Mermaid — has died.
- He was being treated for rare immune and blood cancers and shared updates on social media while receiving support from the Broadway community.
- A GoFundMe was launched in 2025 to “help cover medical bills, household expenses, and the many unexpected costs that come with fighting such a rare illness.”
Bret Hanna-Shuford, a Broadway performer and social media influencer, passed away less than five months after being diagnosed with cancer. He was 46. Known for his roles in several popular stage productions and sharing his life with his husband, Stephen Hanna-Shuford, and their three-year-old son, Maverick, through the Instagram account Broadway Husbands, Bret had a vibrant presence in the theater community.
The actor’s husband announced the news on social media, stating that Bret died in the early hours of Saturday, January 3. “It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that early this morning we said goodbye to the most amazing man, husband and Papa in the universe,” the post read. “Bret Hanna-Shuford left this world peacefully with love surrounded by his family. Our hearts are broken, but we will continue to make him proud of us.”
Bret was diagnosed in the summer of 2025 with an aggressive form of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis and peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL), both of which are rare and life-threatening immune system-related conditions.
Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, often referred to as HLH, involves an overactive immune response that can damage healthy tissue and organs, according to the Cleveland Clinic. The condition can result in severe inflammation and may lead to organ failure, necessitating immediate treatment.
T-cell lymphoma is a type of aggressive blood cancer linked to immune cells and, as noted by health experts, is frequently associated with HLH. Notably, Bret’s T-cell cancers were CD30 negative, which rendered standard targeted therapies less effective.

Throughout his illness, Bret and Stephen kept fans updated on his condition via social media, even as Bret spent extended periods in the hospital during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. In an October post, he expressed a longing to be home, stating, “I really want to go home. I really miss my son, a lot, and my husband. … But I’m sending so much love to you, because your love to me has been incredible.”
In August, a GoFundMe was launched to assist Bret’s family with rising medical expenses and support during his treatment, drawing contributions from various notable figures in the Broadway community, including John Tartaglia and Douglas Sills.
The campaign organizer, Scott Barnhardt, highlighted the arduous journey to obtain a diagnosis for Bret, marked by weeks of uncertainty and numerous medical visits. The family had recently relocated to a new home in Orlando, which was intended to signify a fresh start but instead turned into “an unexpected battle for health and stability.”
Bret was born on May 20, 1979, and had an extensive career that included performances in acclaimed productions such as Wicked, Amazing Grace, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, among others. He also showcased his talents in the Cirque du Soleil production, Paramour, and other renowned shows.
At the time of his illness, Bret was pursuing a graduate degree at the University of Central Florida, which he paused to undergo chemotherapy. In his final video post on December 17, 2025, he expressed gratitude for the support he received, stating, “I hope you know how much I appreciate you and your support of me through this time.”
