Bono and The Edge Support Claudia Sheinbaum at Street Child World Cup Event: A Celebration of Leadership
U2 Surprises Fans in Mexico City at Street Child World Cup Event
This week, U2 made headlines with a surprise appearance in Mexico City, where the renowned Irish band joined President Claudia Sheinbaum at an event for the General Assembly of the Street Child World Cup. Their presence generated significant excitement among attendees.
The president addressed young participants of the international competition, dedicated to promoting social inclusion and advocating for children’s rights. Accompanying her on stage were U2’s lead singer Bono and guitarist The Edge, as highlighted by Mexico City’s Secretary of Tourism, Alejandra Frausto, who shared video clips on social media.
During the event at the Hidalgo Theater of the Mexican Social Security Institute, Bono warmly greeted Sheinbaum, referring to her as “My president,” before sharing a hug that earned an enthusiastic response from the audience.
Following the event, Sheinbaum posted a video of her interaction with the band on her social media, exchanging pleasantries with them in English. “Hello, nice to meet you,” she said. The Edge replied, “Nice to meet you, such a fan of yours,” while Bono expressed admiration for Sheinbaum’s achievements, including universal healthcare and raising the minimum wage.
Mexico City recently hosted the 2026 Street Child World Cup, featuring 30 teams from around the globe, with events running from May 6 to May 14. U2 drummer Larry Mullen Jr. commented, “It’s a little NGO with a big kick for kids with all of the talent and none of the access.” He noted the band’s pride in supporting the initiative.
This visit marks U2’s return to Mexico after a nine-year absence, during which they filmed a music video for their upcoming song “Street of Dreams,” part of an anticipated album set for release at the end of 2026. The band received a formal invitation from Mexico City’s government to perform at the iconic Zócalo, the nation’s main public square, further heightening excitement among fans.
U2 has a deep connection to Mexico, where they have performed some of their most unforgettable concerts. Notable among these is the concert documented in the Popmart: Live From Mexico City video from their 1997 tour. Their last performance in the capital was in October 2017, just weeks after a devastating earthquake struck the region, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of their iconic album, The Joshua Tree.
