Authorities Investigate Disappearance of Savannah Guthrie’s Mother
Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of NBC’s Today show host Savannah Guthrie, was reported missing on Saturday, January 31, from her home in Tucson, Arizona. According to law enforcement, a trail of blood was discovered at the scene, leading investigators to believe she may have been kidnapped.
At a press briefing, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos expressed concerns over Nancy’s well-being, stating, "We believe she was taken against her will." Currently, authorities have not identified any suspects or determined if multiple individuals were involved in her presumed abduction.
Nancy was last seen around 9:30 p.m. local time on the evening of her disappearance. Family members reported her missing the following day around noon.
Images from the scene show a visible trail of what appears to be blood on the front steps of her residence, alongside remnants of a Ring camera that had been removed. As of now, the Pima County Sheriff’s Office has not commented on the specifics of the blood found at the home nor whose blood it may be.
The house has been designated as a crime scene due to “very concerning conditions” discovered during the initial investigation. Law enforcement has indicated that they found "biological DNA evidence" at the location but have not disclosed further details.
Sheriff Nanos noted that Nancy does not suffer from cognitive impairments, stating, “She’s very alert, she’s of good, sound mind.” Yet, he added that she is in “not good physical health” and requires daily medication, which could be life-threatening if not administered within 24 hours.
Authorities are currently reviewing surveillance footage and license plate reader data as part of their investigation. "We know she didn’t just walk out of there,” Nanos stated, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
Savannah Guthrie, who has refrained from appearing on Today since her mother’s disappearance, remains with her family in Arizona as the investigation continues. On social media, she appealed to followers for prayers for her mother’s safe return.
Anyone with information regarding Nancy’s disappearance is urged to reach out to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
