Blake Snell of the Dodgers Set to Undergo Arm Surgery, Recovery Timeline Uncertain
Blake Snell to Undergo Elbow Surgery
Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Blake Snell will have surgery on Tuesday to remove loose bodies from his left elbow, as confirmed by Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.
While the specifics of the surgical procedure remain unclear, there is hope that Snell may receive a minimally invasive treatment. Roberts mentioned that Dr. Neal ElAttrache’s innovative NanoNeedle scope technology was used recently on Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal, offering a promising potential alternative for Snell. Those familiar with the situation noted that a conclusive assessment of Snell’s condition will only be possible after an internal examination, as the location of the loose bodies significantly influences the surgical approach.
If Snell qualifies for the NanoNeedle Scope 2.0, it could expedite his recovery by limiting tissue damage compared to traditional arthroscopic methods. However, due to the nature of this new technology, pinpointing a precise recovery timeline remains challenging. Skubal, for example, had a bone chip removed just 10 days ago but is already advancing in his throwing program.
Tuesday’s surgery will provide the Dodgers with greater clarity regarding Snell’s recovery and future availability. Snell, a two-time Cy Young Award winner, was scratched from his scheduled start on Friday, marking only his second appearance of the season. His subsequent placement on the injured list was backdated to May 12. The season for Snell had already been delayed due to what the team labeled left shoulder fatigue, and in his brief start against the Braves last week, he allowed four earned runs over three innings.
As the team navigates these medical challenges, the impact on the pitching rotation will be closely monitored in the weeks ahead.
