Black Rodeo Drama Approved by Starz as the Network Expands Its Original Series Lineup
Starz is making significant strides towards developing its own programming with a new series centered on Black rodeo culture in Texas. The network has officially greenlit an untitled drama from showrunner Kirk A. Moore, known for his work on Demascus, along with executive producer Mark Johnson of Breaking Bad fame, in collaboration with Counterpart Studios.
Set across eight episodes, the family drama will take place in Southeast Texas, where rodeo is described as not just an activity but a defining aspect of identity. The storyline will revolve around three siblings connected by their mother’s legacy and their father’s unresolved issues. As they pursue their ambitions, they find their lives entangled, with shifting alliances and relationships. Starz highlighted that the series will feature a blend of hip hop energy and country spirit.
Moore will act as showrunner and executive producer alongside Johnson and Myki Bajaj of Gran Via, with additional oversight from Tony Hernandez, Elise Henderson, and Lilly Burns of Counterpart Studios. Starz executives Giovanna Desselle and Christina Jokanovich will also supervise the project.
This marks Starz’s second wholly owned production, following the boxing drama Fightland, created by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson.
The move aligns with a strategy articulated last year by CEO Jeff Hirsch, who stated that the standalone Starz—after its split from Lionsgate—would take ownership of a significant portion of its programming. By 2027, Hirsch anticipates the network will own half of its content slate.
“There’s a large content savings by controlling your IP,” Hirsch noted.
Kathryn Busby, President of Original Programming at Starz, expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, “Messy family dynamics, jaw-dropping spectacle and an undeniable swagger – this is the kind of bold, original storytelling we’re proud to own from the ground up. With a touch of urban grit and a huge dose of country soul, it’s Texas through and through. There’s nothing else like it, and we’re thrilled to bring it to Starz’s audiences.”
Moore is represented by CAA, along with manager Scott Carr and attorneys Loan Dang and Nina Shaw.
