Bicyclist Suspected of DUI After Colliding with Car in Santa Monica
Santa Monica Cyclist Arrested for DUI After Hit-and-Run Incident
A 37-year-old woman from Santa Monica was arrested last week on suspicion of cycling under the influence after being involved in a collision with a car and subsequently leaving the scene. The incident occurred early on May 7, prompting police to respond around 5:30 a.m. to a report of the crash near Fourth Street and Santa Monica Boulevard.
According to police, the bicyclist struck a Honda Civic and failed to exchange information with the vehicle’s driver. Fortunately, the Civic reported only minor damage.
The woman was located later near Ocean Avenue and Pico Boulevard, where officers noted signs of alcohol impairment. Determining that she was unsafe to continue riding, officers arrested her for misdemeanor cycling under the influence and issued a citation.
In a statement, Santa Monica police reiterated the importance of safety on public roadways. "In California, it is unlawful to ride a bicycle on a public roadway while under the influence of alcohol or drugs," the agency emphasized. They warned that impairment can negatively impact balance, coordination, reaction time, and judgment, making it dangerous not only for the cyclist but also for pedestrians, drivers, and other road users. The department encourages individuals who have been drinking to plan for alternative transportation, such as using a sober ride or walking with a sober companion.
