Berlin Award-Winning Film ‘Rose,’ Featuring Sandra Hüller, Acquired by Mubi for North America, UK, Latin America, Italy, and Beyond
Mubi Acquires Rights to Berlinale Winner "Rose" Starring Sandra Hüller
Mubi has secured all rights for "Rose," a film that triumphed at the Berlin International Film Festival and stars acclaimed actress Sandra Hüller. The acquisition covers North America, the UK, Ireland, Italy, Turkey, Latin America, Australia, and New Zealand.
Directed by Markus Schleinzer, "Rose" premiered in competition at Berlinale, where Hüller won the Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance. The film showcases her versatility in a poignant narrative set against the backdrop of the Thirty Years’ War. Hüller plays a mysterious soldier who arrives in a secluded Protestant village, seeking acceptance while shrouded in deceit.
The synopsis describes her character as a small, quiet figure, disfigured by a scar, claiming to be the heir to an abandoned farm. Armed with a document to support his claim, he gradually wins over the villagers, demonstrating his work ethic and devotion to faith.
Hüller may find herself in the awards conversation again later this year with upcoming projects such as Pawel Pawlikowski’s Cannes contender "Fatherland" and Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s film "Digger," featuring Tom Cruise.
"Rose" is a collaborative effort from Schubert, Row Pictures, and Walker + Worm Film, with producers Johannes Schubert, Philipp Worm, Tobias Walker, and Karsten Stöter. While Mubi has not yet announced a release date, The Match Factory, which handles international sales, has already distributed the film to several overseas markets.
This film marks Schleinzer’s third feature, following his acclaimed debut "Michael" in 2011 and "Angelo," which screened at both the San Sebastian and Toronto film festivals in 2018.
Before turning to directing, Schleinzer was a renowned casting director in Europe, collaborating with notable filmmakers like Jessica Hausner and Michael Haneke. His work on Haneke’s Golden Globe-winning and Oscar-nominated "The White Ribbon" included not only casting child actors but also directing their performances on set.
Mubi’s recent acquisitions feature a range of award-winning titles, including Oscar winners "Sentimental Value" and "My Father’s Shadow," as well as Golden Lion winner "Father Mother Sister Brother." Upcoming releases from the platform include "Fatherland," "Let Love In," "Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma," and "A Long Winter."
