Ben Affleck recently reaffirmed one of the most notable moments from his time on set during the filming of Gone Girl. The actor, now 53, engaged in a spirited discussion with co-stars Matt Damon, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and Sasha Calle about their passion for Boston sports, which led to a playful reminiscence about his refusal to wear a New York Yankees cap for a scene in the film.
This refusal had substantial implications for the production of the 2014 thriller Gone Girl, ultimately causing a temporary pause as Affleck stood firm against wearing the Yankees cap. The actor, a dedicated supporter of the Boston Red Sox, objected to endorsing a rival team, forcing director David Fincher to concede to his demand.
“Technically, I passed on a movie where —” Damon began before Affleck interjected humorously, “It always has to be about Matt.”
During the playful confrontation, Affleck’s objection not only showcased his dedication to his team but also resulted in a comic back-and-forth about the film’s production. Affleck explained, “I said, ‘David, I love you, I would do anything for you, but I will not wear a Yankees hat. I just can’t. I can’t wear it because it’s going to become a thing, David. I will never hear the end of it.’”
In the event, Affleck was ultimately permitted to wear a Mets cap in the film, which he characterized as a compromise that required “a lot of shuttle diplomacy.” He humorously called his stance “a one-man riot against the Yankees,” although he and Fincher resolved the issue amicably.
Reflecting on the incident, Affleck remarked, “This was very Switzerland,” highlighting the unexpected but lighthearted nature of the resolution.
