Scott Speedman Shifts from Seattle to South Florida for ‘RJ Decker’
Actor Scott Speedman is transitioning from the familiar grounds of Grey’s Anatomy in Seattle to the vibrant setting of RJ Decker in South Florida. The new series, adapted from Carl Hiaasen’s novel Double Whammy, centers on a disgraced newspaper photographer and former convict who reinvents himself as a private investigator amidst the quirky and crime-riddled backdrop of South Florida.
In his role as RJ Decker, Speedman embarks on unusual cases supported by his ex-girlfriend, her police detective spouse, and a mysterious benefactor from his past—who may be either a powerful ally or a path back to prison. Joining him in the cast are Jaina Lee Ortiz, Kevin Rankin, Adelaide Clemens, and Bevin Bru.
Although set in the Sunshine State, most of RJ Decker was filmed in Wilmington, North Carolina, with select scenes in South Florida. During a recent set visit, Ortiz shared her thoughts on the unique atmosphere.
“As someone from the Bronx, I’m not accustomed to small-town life where everyone knows each other. It’s refreshing and peaceful here,” she noted. “Traffic is minimal and everything is accessible in under twenty minutes.”
Ortiz highlighted the significance of Florida as a character in the show. “[The state] is chaotic, fun, sexy, and weird. The crime cases are unpredictable,” she expressed. “Viewers can expect unconventional character dynamics that reflect real human relationships.”
Rankin described the challenge of finding North Carolina locations that convincingly portray Florida. His character is depicted as the epitome of the state he represents. “He knows everyone and what’s happening in town,” he quipped.
Supporting the engaging narratives, RJ Decker incorporates a bar setting inspired by real-life locales, which is filled with custom cocktails and eclectic decor, contributing to a lively atmosphere.
The series, set to premiere on March 3, is poised to entertain audiences with its distinct blend of humor and drama, all wrapped in the colorful chaos of Florida.
