Behind the Scenes of ‘Back To The Future: The Musical’ with Michael J. Fox and the Broadway Cast – Check Out the Trailer
EXCLUSIVE: Tomorrow, March 24, a feature-length documentary detailing the creation of the Broadway and West End musical adaptation of Back to the Future is set to premiere on platforms including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and YouTube.
Directed by Brian Stillman, A Future on Stage features interviews with the creative team and cast of the stage adaptation, along with insights from the original film’s star, Michael J. Fox, and its director, Robert Zemeckis.
The trailer for the documentary has also been released.
Produced by Nacelle, a Burbank-based production and distribution company known for documentaries like The Toys That Made Us and The Movies That Made Us, this project features a collaboration with Bob Gale, Co-Writer and Co-Producer of Back to the Future, and filmmaker Stillman, renowned for Igniting the Spark – The Story of Magic: The Gathering.
In addition to Fox and Zemeckis, the documentary includes interviews with Gale and Broadway cast members such as Casey Likes, Roger Bart, Liana Hunt, Jelani Remy, Nathaniel Hackmann, Mikaela Secada, and Merrit David Janes. The team behind the musical also includes producer Colin Ingram, director John Rando, and production designer Tim Hatley.

Executive Producers for the documentary are Brian Volk-Weiss, Bob Gale, Cisco Henson, and Brian Stillman.
“Having Back to the Future the Musical playing to sold-out houses around the world is a future I never could have predicted,” remarked Gale. “I thought getting the movie off the ground was insanely difficult, but getting the musical version on stage was even harder, and this documentary really captures what we all went through.”
The stage adaptation of Back to the Future was co-created by Gale and Zemeckis, featuring original music by Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard, along with popular songs from the film such as “The Power of Love,” “Johnny B. Goode,” “Earth Angel,” and “Back in Time.”
The production has received significant recognition, winning the Olivier Award for Best New Musical in the West End and garnering two Tony Award nominations for its 2023-2025 Broadway run, including scenic design and featured actor Bart.
After a successful five-year run in the West End, Back to the Future: The Musical is currently touring the United States, with future productions planned in Tokyo and Hamburg, and additional stops in cities like Edinburgh and Paris.
Director Stillman has an acclaimed background in documentary filmmaking, with credits including Plastic Galaxy: The Story of Star Wars Toys and Eye of the Beholder: The Art of Dungeons & Dragons. He has also contributed to Nacelle’s The Toys That Made Us, The Movies That Made Us, The Center Seat: 55 Years of Star Trek, and Icons Unearthed.
