Samuel Weidenhofer is in disbelief as he reflects on the whirlwind of the past week. The Australian creator introduced the world to 88-year-old Michigan veteran Ed Bambas through a TikTok video that highlighted his experience as a longtime cashier at Meijer supermarket.
Bambas, who retired from General Motors in 1999, returned to work nearly a decade ago following the death of his wife from a prolonged illness. Around that time, his employer also cut his pension, he shared with local ABC affiliate WXYZ.
The response to the video was swift and overwhelming. Weidenhofer expressed astonishment at the outpouring of kindness that resulted, noting that contributions surpassed $1.7 million in just days, enabling Bambas to retire.
“It’s unbelievable. I’m just so thankful for the community,” Weidenhofer told PEOPLE during an exclusive Zoom interview. “Never did I think it would get this support. I’m blown out of the water… It’s record breaking for sure. Like 1.7, maybe 8 million now.”
Recently, Weidenhofer delivered the life-changing news directly to Bambas, who had been unaware of the extensive support due to not having a phone or computer. The moment proved to be rich in emotion and unforgettable.
Weidenhofer documented the moment Bambas received a check in an Instagram post, stating, “1.77 MILLION, One of the biggest individual fundraisers in GoFundMe HISTORY. 🥹❤️- You’ve changed Ed’s life. For the bottom of my heart, thank you. You haven’t just helped Ed; you’ve raised awareness and spread hope to the ENTIRE WORLD.”
Leading up to this moment, Weidenhofer had aimed to keep the surprise simple and heartfelt. “I’m just gonna approach him and be like, ‘Hey Ed, like how have you been?'” He added that Bambas still had $400 given to him earlier, as he was unsure about its reality.
With nearly $300,000 in debt, this funding will significantly transform Bambas’s life, providing him peace of mind and alleviating stress. Weidenhofer remarked, “He’s not gonna have to stress anymore.”

In hindsight, Weidenhofer, who is on a two-month visit to the United States, indicated that he discovered Bambas entirely by chance. “I never knew about Ed’s story or what he had been through,” he explained. “It goes to show that you never know what story someone is hiding behind.”
Weidenhofer believes the connection to Bambas may resonate deeply with many, as his story reflects struggles shared by numerous individuals, particularly in America. “Ed represents a situation so many people can relate to,” he noted.
For Weidenhofer, the most significant aspect of this viral moment is the collective impact of generosity. “It’s just so much bigger than a video now…even GoFundMe told me they had never seen this amount come from one person posting it,” he reflected.

As the week comes to a close, Weidenhofer plans to rest upon returning home but envisions continuing his goodwill efforts on a larger scale. “I would dream of being involved in something authentic on Netflix,” he expressed.
