Bear Spotted in Fillmore Neighborhood: What You Need to Know
Bear Sighting Reported in Fillmore, California
Residents of Fillmore, a community in Ventura County, reported a bear sighting Wednesday morning. In response, the city alerted locals to avoid the area, particularly the 800 block of 4th Street, while law enforcement officers arrived to manage the situation. Officers are coordinating with wildlife officials to ensure safety.
Understanding Bear Behavior
Black bears, known for their diverse coat colors, typically feed on plants, insects, nuts, and berries, but they may also scavenge from garbage bins when food becomes scarce in their natural habitats. This behavior often leads them to forage in Southern California foothill neighborhoods.
The population of black bears in California has increased significantly over the past two decades, rising from an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 in the early 1980s to between 25,000 and 30,000 today, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Characteristically, black bears possess narrow heads and small ears, with coats that can vary from tan and brown to black. Adult females typically weigh around 200 pounds, while males can exceed 350 pounds, with some individuals reaching over 600 pounds.
Approximately half of California’s black bear population resides in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and surrounding areas, while only about 10 percent live in central western and southwestern California.
Interestingly, despite being featured on the state flag, the California grizzly bear is no longer found in the wild. The last recorded sighting was in the early 1920s, when the bear was killed.
