The Backstreet Boys have reimagined their classic hit “I Want It That Way” for T-Mobile’s Super Bowl commercial, filmed in New York City amidst a powerful winter storm. The commercial, set to debut on February 8, 2026, seeks to deliver a fresh take on the iconic song while promoting the brand’s message.
Nick Carter reflected on the challenging conditions during an interview with Billboard’s Tetris Kelly. “We were hit with the winter storm right at the exact same time we were supposed to start filming,” he said. The original plan for a two-day shoot was compressed into a single day due to the inclement weather.
The filming took place at T-Mobile’s Times Square store, where temperatures dropped to around six degrees. Carter described the atmosphere, stating, “There’s a state of emergency basically in the city. The inside of the store was freezing. So every time that they opened the door, it was like a wind tunnel, or like a refrigerator.”
Despite the difficulties, Carter noted the enjoyable aspect of the collaborative effort, calling it “a lot of fun, but it was also a lot of work — good work.” Bandmate Kevin Richardson added, “It was a great collaboration,” highlighting the teamwork between the group and the production team.
Billboard will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the shooting of the T-Mobile commercial, featuring bloopers and exclusive footage.
The 60-second advertisement is produced in collaboration with Panay Films and is aimed at prompting viewers to reconsider their wireless provider. Lucy McLellan, T-Mobile’s chief brand and communications officer, stated, “This spot is about asking Americans to pause and think about what their wireless provider actually does for them.”
The commercial also features comedian Druski and actor Pierson Fodé, directed by Steve Pink with a talented creative team. Additionally, a young actor made a commendable effort during the extended shoot, which lasted late into the night due to weather-related delays. AJ McLean noted that the young girl was likely on set until 3 a.m., just as Machine Gun Kelly arrived to film his comedic cameo.
Prior to shooting, the Backstreet Boys recorded new, humorous lyrics specifically for the commercial version of “I Want It That Way.” Howie Dorough mentioned that they explored several variations of the lyrics, aiming to find the perfect fit for the ad.
The Backstreet Boys’ collaboration with T-Mobile is set to captivate viewers on Super Bowl Sunday, showcasing the blend of nostalgia and contemporary messaging aimed at resonating with a modern audience.
