Ava DuVernay, Jodie Foster, Spike Lee and Others Urge Trump and DHS to Shut Down Texas Facility for Detained Children
Celebrities Rally Against Immigration Detention Center in Texas
In a recent wave of activism, several high-profile celebrities have come together to demand the immediate closure of the Dilley Immigration Processing Center, a family detention facility in Texas. The call to action follows a series of protests against former President Donald Trump, where stars like Robert De Niro, Jane Fonda, Bruce Springsteen, and Jimmy Kimmel were prominently featured.
The petition urging the facility’s shutdown highlights a critical sentiment: "No child should be locked in an immigration detention center." Notable signatories include Fonda, Pedro Pascal, Wunmi Mosaku, Morgan Spector, Carrie Coon, Natasha Lyonne, Diego Luna, Tatiana Maslany, and director Alejandro González Iñárritu, among others.
Furthermore, Ava DuVernay, Jodie Foster, Ben Stiller, and Spike Lee have added their names, along with a diverse group of activists and artists, including Joan Baez, Tig Notaro, and Jessica Alba.
The petition points out that the Dilley facility, operated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), is reported to have poor conditions detrimental to the health and well-being of children. It states, “Children held in immigration detention endure trauma, neglect, and conditions that violate basic standards of health, safety, dignity, and human rights.”
High-profile educator Ms. Rachel emphasized the urgency of the cause, stating, “Every child, everywhere, deserves to feel safe, to be cared for, and to be treated with dignity. No child should be locked in an immigration detention center and subjected to these cruel conditions.”
The Dilley center has faced scrutiny amid reports of abuse and neglect. A recent incident involving five-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos, who was detained and ultimately released on February 1 alongside his father, has brought significant media attention to the facility. This case highlighted the administration’s controversial practices regarding the detention of families and children seeking asylum.
Although recent data indicates a drop in the number of families held at Dilley, the ongoing protests serve as a poignant reminder of the urgent need for reform within the immigration system. Participants in these protests continue to highlight the inhumane conditions reported inside the facility.
The movement initiated by these celebrities underscores a collective desire for systemic changes that prioritize the well-being of children and families, aiming to end the practice of detention. The petition further calls for greater transparency and accountability within the immigration system.
As public awareness grows, the implications of this activism may significantly influence future discussions surrounding immigration policy and child welfare in the United States.
