Anna Camp Faces Backlash Over Deleted Post Celebrating ‘Scream 7’ Success
Actress Anna Camp has removed a social media post praising the box-office triumph of Scream 7, following significant backlash related to the film. The Pitch Perfect star initially shared an Instagram Story that garnered criticism for its insensitive context amidst ongoing boycotts of the movie.
The post, which featured Taylor Swift’s “Karma” playing in the background, proclaimed, “The boycott didn’t work. The critics hate didn’t work. The pathetic leaks didn’t work. What worked was audiences coming out and making the film a success.”
After facing intense scrutiny, Camp deleted the post and subsequently issued an apology on X, stating, “It has come to my attention that I reposted someone else’s story that does not reflect my personal beliefs. I have since deleted the repost because I absolutely meant no harm. I’m sorry to anyone who was affected.”
In its opening weekend, Scream 7 achieved a remarkable domestic gross of $64.1 million, totaling $97.2 million worldwide, making it the most successful horror debut by Paramount.
The film’s release has been contentious, especially after the firing of its original lead, Melissa Barrera, in November 2023, following her comments supporting Palestinians during the Israel-Hamas conflict. The production company stated they had “zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form.”
Shortly after Barrera’s departure, co-star Jenna Ortega also exited, leaving the franchise in a precarious position. Original director Christopher Landon followed suit and stepped down from the project. Despite these setbacks, Spyglass Media Group continued production, appointing Kevin Williamson, the creator of the franchise, to direct the film.
Pro-Palestine activists protested Barrera’s dismissal during the film’s premiere in Los Angeles last week, highlighting the ongoing controversy surrounding Scream 7 and its impact on cultural discussions.
