Angels Bring Former Slugger Trey Mancini on Board with Minor-League Deal
Former Baltimore Orioles slugger and cancer survivor Trey Mancini is making another attempt at a major league comeback after signing a minor league contract with the Los Angeles Angels, which includes an invitation to the team’s spring training camp.
The Angels officially announced Mancini’s addition to their roster of 27 non-roster invitees on Wednesday, bringing him to Tempe, Arizona, for training this spring.
At 33 years old, Mancini has compiled a career batting average of .263, along with 129 home runs and 400 RBIs over seven seasons. However, he has not played in the major leagues since 2023. He began his career with the Orioles, spending six seasons in Baltimore, where he hit a career-high 29 home runs in 2019.
Mancini’s career took a challenging turn in 2020 when he missed the entire season after surgery to remove a malignant tumor from his colon. He made a successful return to the Orioles in 2021 and earned a World Series ring in 2022 following a trade to the Houston Astros.
During the 2023 season, Mancini played for the Chicago Cubs and later joined the minor league systems of the Cincinnati Reds, Miami Marlins, and Arizona Diamondbacks. He opted out of a minor league deal with the Diamondbacks last July after an impressive showing in which he batted .308 with 16 home runs for Triple-A Reno.
