Amos Vernon and Nunzio Randazzo from “People We Meet On Vacation” to Write New “Care Bears” Movie for Warner Bros.
Screenwriting Duo Tapped for New Care Bears Film
Amos Vernon and Nunzio Randazzo, the screenwriters behind Netflix’s popular romantic comedy People We Meet on Vacation, have been chosen to write the upcoming Care Bears movie for Warner Bros. This announcement follows the recent appointment of Josh Greenbaum as director.
The move comes on the heels of Vernon and Randazzo’s successful venture in selling their live-action comedy spec Blow Up the Chat to Warner Bros. in a competitive bidding process, which will be directed by Jeff Schaffer.
Details about the Care Bears movie’s plot remain undisclosed. Production will be led by Chris Bender and Jake Weiner from Good Fear, alongside Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley of GoldDay. Sean Gorman and Daniel Barnes from Cloudco will serve as executive producers, with Sheila Walcott overseeing the project for Warner Bros.
The Care Bears franchise has its roots in the 1980s, emerging as characters from greeting cards created by American Greetings (now Cloudco Entertainment). Each bear features a unique color and "belly badge," symbolizing various emotions and traits, including Tenderheart Bear, Cheer Bear, and Grumpy Bear. These characters were designed to help children express their feelings and develop empathy.
The initial success of the greeting cards led to a toy line, animated specials, and a television series. The original Care Bears cartoon aired from 1985 to 1988, followed by three theatrical films in the late 1980s. The franchise has seen several revivals over the years, including new iterations of the TV series in the 2000s and 2010s, with the latest titled Care Bears: Unlock the Magic, which debuted in 2019.
The Care Bears franchise continues to thrive as a significant commercial entity, amassing over $10 billion in lifetime retail sales.
Vernon and Randazzo previously collaborated with Yulin Kuang on People We Meet on Vacation, an adaptation of Emily Henry’s bestselling novel. The film, directed by Brett Haley and featuring Emily Bader and Tom Blyth, premiered at number one on Netflix’s Top 10 and garnered over 40 million views.
In addition, the writing duo has adapted the Sega game Toejam & Earl for Amazon. They are represented by CAA and Hansen Jacobson Teller.
