Amazon MX Player Launches Fatafat: A New Microdrama Experience for India’s Growing Vertical Video Trend
Amazon MX Player Launches New Microdrama Service Amid Growing Vertical Video Market
Amazon MX Player has introduced a new microdrama service, responding to predictions of significant growth for vertical video content in India. This move signifies Amazon’s ongoing efforts to expand its streaming offerings within the Indian market.
Named Fatafat, the platform is designed as a mobile-first service delivering serialized vertical videos at no cost to users. The content will span various genres, including romance, thriller, and youth-focused themes, diversifying Amazon’s streaming options in India.
In addition to the paid Prime Video subscription, Amazon MX Player also provides a free, ad-supported version, with Fatafat integrated into this user interface. The service was initially announced during an event earlier this month, alongside plans for an international content section called Vdesi.
The trend of microdramas is burgeoning globally, with an increasing number of streaming services and producers joining the landscape. In India, where the popularity of vertical video remains in its early stages, companies are swiftly mobilizing to establish a foothold in this emerging market.
A recent report from Lumikai, entitled “State of India Interactive Media Report 2025,” emphasized the rapid growth of the microdrama sector in India. "A year ago, microdramas barely registered as a category in India. Today, they are a $300M market," stated the report, which documented 450 million microdrama downloads and 100 million monthly active users in 2025. Projections suggest that the sector could burgeon to $4.5 billion by 2030.
Fatafat’s title lineup will be revealed in the coming months, with actor Munawar Faruqui leading an advertising campaign to generate interest.
Karan Bedi, Head of Amazon MX Player, commented, "With Fatafat, we are extending that promise to the rapidly growing micro-drama category. These are stories designed for how audiences consume content today—quick, engaging, and mobile-first—while remaining completely free for viewers across India."
Amogh Dusad, Head of Content at the streamer, added, "Micro-dramas open up exciting creative possibilities for storytelling. With Fatafat, we are building a diverse slate of serialized stories across genres while keeping the experience fast, engaging, and accessible to viewers everywhere."
