Amazon MGM is Bringing the ‘Windy City’ Series to Life, Inspired by Liz Tomforde’s Books and Created by Alison McDonald
Amazon MGM Studios Acquires Rights to Liz Tomforde’s Bestselling ‘Windy City’ Series
Amazon MGM Studios has secured the rights to Liz Tomforde’s acclaimed Windy City book series, aiming to develop it into a television series. The announcement highlights the studio’s growing interest in adapting popular literature for the small screen.
Alison McDonald will write and executive produce the series, with Premeditated Productions on board to produce through its first-look deal with Amazon. Liz Pelletier and Sherryl Clark from Premeditated will also serve as executive producers, while Julie Jarmon, SVP of Television, will co-executive produce and oversee the project. Tomforde will additionally lend her expertise as an executive producer.
Kicking off with 2022’s Mile High, the Windy City series consists of five interconnected sports romance novels that center around a close-knit group of professional athletes. Each story explores their relationships with strong, complex women who challenge them in unexpected ways. The series has achieved significant success, selling millions of copies globally, receiving over a billion page reads on Kindle, and being translated into 21 languages.
As a bestselling author for both The New York Times and The Sunday Times, Tomforde recently released In Her Own League, a spinoff focused on Major League Baseball’s first female team owner and a beloved Chicago coach. Additionally, she announced a new four-book series titled Wilder Woods, which centers on Northern California athletics.
Tomforde expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, “I started writing Mile High while working as a flight attendant for a professional hockey team. What started as a personal passion project has turned into a career that I truly never thought was possible. And now, thanks to Premeditated Productions and Amazon Studios, it’s becoming something bigger than I ever dreamed. Soon readers who fell in love with my characters will get to watch their stories step off the page and unfold on screen.”
McDonald, an Emmy, BAFTA, NAACP Image, and WGA Award-nominated writer, boasts a distinguished portfolio that includes the Netflix dark comedy Russian Doll, Showtime’s Your Honor, and the critically acclaimed remake of Roots. She has also received prestigious accolades, including the Humanitas Prize, and is represented by TFC Management.
Premeditated’s television slate encompasses several projects, including Fourth Wing, Storm Breakers, and Lux at Amazon MGM, as well as feature films like Shield of Sparrows and The Marriage Bargain. The company recently announced an extension of its first-look deal with Amazon.
Tomforde is represented by WME and Jessica Watterson at Sandra Dijkstra Literary Agency.
