Amazon MGM, Chernin, and Hasbro Are Bringing ‘The Game Of Life’ Movie to the Big Screen with Sean Anders Directing and Allan Loeb Writing
Sean Anders Set to Direct Film Adaptation of The Game of Life
Sean Anders will direct a film adaptation of the classic board game The Game of Life, based on a script by Allan Loeb. The project is being produced by Chernin Entertainment’s Peter Chernin and David Ready, along with Zev Foreman from Hasbro Entertainment, Anders, and John Morris.
Details concerning the film’s plot remain undisclosed. Cyrus Warner and Alex Jacobson will oversee the project for Hasbro Entertainment.
Originally introduced as "The Checkered Game of Life" in 1860, The Game of Life has sold over 70 million units across 59 countries and 26 languages. The game is known for its distinctive spinner and intergenerational appeal, allowing players to pursue their aspirations while navigating careers, relationships, and unexpected life events.
Sources suggest that Chernin and Hasbro had been seeking a unique concept for a Game of Life film for some time. Following discussions with Loeb, they identified a promising angle and quickly set the project in motion, securing Anders as director. Amazon has acted swiftly to engage with the film, establishing it as a key priority for the studio as Loeb develops the script.
Anders and Morris form a veteran filmmaking partnership, having collaborated on numerous successful projects over the past twenty years. Their credits include the Apple TV musical comedy Spirited, starring Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds, as well as Instant Family, featuring Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne, both directed by Anders. They also co-wrote Horrible Bosses 2, with Anders at the helm and Morris as producer. Their extensive portfolio includes titles such as Dumb and Dumber To, We’re the Millers, Mr. Popper’s Penguins, Hot Tub Time Machine, and She’s Out of My League.
Allan Loeb is noted for his work as a writer, producer, and actor, having penned films like Collateral Beauty, directed by David Frankel, and Just Go With It, starring Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler. His other notable works include The Switch, The Dilemma, and the critically acclaimed crime-thriller 21. Loeb is currently working on the upcoming film The Best Is Yet to Come, directed by Jon Turteltaub.
The Game of Life film is part of Hasbro Entertainment’s initiative to enhance storytelling by creating films and series centered on its most iconic brands. Upcoming projects include a re-imagined Clue for both film and television with Sony, a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series titled Forgotten Realms for Netflix, and a live-action Power Rangers television series in development with 20th Century TV for Disney+. Other projects also encompass various adaptations of Monopoly and Magic: The Gathering, along with game shows based on Trivial Pursuit and Scrabble.
Chernin Entertainment’s film division, under the leadership of president David Ready, has produced acclaimed films such as Ford v Ferrari and Hidden Figures. Recent successes include Back in Action, now among Netflix’s most-watched films, and the Fear Street trilogy. Their forthcoming slate features a variety of projects, including Apex and Luther 2, along with a first-look deal with Apple TV.
