Altadena Coach Reflects on Resilience One Year After Losing His Home in the Eaton Fire
Altadena Coach Reflects on Year Since Losing Home in Eaton Fire
LOS ANGELES COUNTY, Calif. – Adonis Jones Jr., affectionately known as "Coach AD," provided an update on his recovery after losing his home of over 50 years in the devastating Eaton Fire a year ago. Speaking exclusively with FOX 11, he reflected on the challenges encountered along the path to rebuilding.
"I still wake up every day thinking about the fire," Jones remarked in a conversation with Good Day LA’s Mario Ramirez. He described the aftermath as a "nightmare," emphasizing the emotional toll it has taken not only on him but also on his family.
The plight of the Jones family mirrors that of several others in the community who have struggled with slow recovery processes since the firestorm. During a recent discussion from the site of his former home—now merely an empty plot—Jones expressed disbelief at the magnitude of the loss. "It’s still mind-blowing…standing here and the process of rebuilding," he said.
Despite the hardships, Jones remains determined. "We’re going to rebuild," he stated with confidence, though he acknowledged the difficulties faced, particularly by his wife. Navigating the bureaucratic maze of permits has proven to be particularly frustrating. "The process with the permit was just going around and around in circles," he explained, although he shared a glimmer of hope that came over the holidays when the family received their rebuilding permit on Christmas Eve.
Sightings of progress in the rebuilding efforts of others in his neighborhood have bolstered Jones’s optimism. "I have seen this process of rebuilding, and that was the only thing that really gave us a little bit more hope in this process," he noted.
His daughter, Rochele, has witnessed the emotional strain on her parents. "You look up to your parents as your superheroes, and you have to remind them that sometimes it’s okay to take the cape off," she expressed, reflecting on the difficulties of this past year.
As the Jones family continues their journey of recovery, they remain committed to overcoming the challenges that lie ahead.
