Adria Arjona Joins the Cast of DC’s Superman Sequel, Man of Tomorrow
In recent developments for the upcoming Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, Adria Arjona has been cast as Maxima following auditions last week. The film, produced by DC Studios, is directed by James Gunn, who also wrote the screenplay. David Corenswet will reprise his role as Superman.
DC Studios has not issued any comments regarding the casting decision.
Arjona will join a notable ensemble cast that includes Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Lars Eidinger as Brainiac, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific. Aaron Pierre is also part of the cast.
Maxima, the character Arjona will portray, is a warrior queen from the planet Almerac. She first appeared in Action Comics #645 in 1990, arriving on Earth in search of a suitable mate, ultimately targeting Superman. The character was created by writer Roger Stern and artist George Pérez, and has been depicted variously as an antagonist, ally, and potential love interest to Superman in DC’s comics.
Maxima has previously appeared in live-action adaptations, portrayed by Charlotte Sullivan in Smallville and Eve Torres Gracie in Supergirl. She has also been featured in Superman: The Animated Series, but this will be her debut in a live-action DC film.
This casting marks another significant role for Arjona, who recently secured a co-lead position in a remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, opposite Michael B. Jordan, set for release in 2027.
Arjona is represented by CAA and Goodman Genow. The Hollywood Reporter was the first to report her casting as Maxima.
