A San Dimas Mom Shares Heartfelt Moments with Her Son Journeying with Cerebral Palsy
Celebrating Milestones: A Mother’s Journey with Her Son
As Mother’s Day approaches, one San Dimas mother is reflecting on the significant milestones her son has achieved. Hellen Deanda, a full-time caregiver for her 17-year-old son, Jose Elias, who has cerebral palsy, finds pride and joy in their journey together.
Deanda, a single mother, recalls the early challenges when Jose was born prematurely at just six months, weighing only 3 pounds, 10 ounces. “It’s been an adventure with him,” she stated. “They thought he was not going to speak, talk or anything like that.” Against the odds, Jose has blossomed, now speaking both English and Spanish, showcasing the dedication and love his mother has provided throughout his life.
Music is a passion for young Elias, who enjoys playing the trumpet. Each performance is a testament to the support and guidance he has received—a reflection of the deep bond between mother and son. “She means the world to me, man,” Elias said, expressing his affection for Deanda.
Through dedicated speech therapy and various treatments, much of which has been facilitated by Deanda, Jose has gained critical independence. Her commitment to finding resources and acquiring specialized skills has been pivotal to his development. “One thing that brings tears to my eyes is that he hangs out with regular kids and kids with special needs, and doing stuff with the kids,” Deanda shared.
A recent outing to the park further solidified their bond. “We sat at the park and said, ‘Mom, I have to tell you something.’ He said, ‘I love you for everything you’ve done for me and made me grow,’” Deanda recalled. This heartfelt expression of gratitude left her feeling privileged to witness her son’s growth.
As the country honors mothers this Sunday, Deanda’s story is a poignant reminder of the power of perseverance, love, and connection in overcoming challenges.
