The friendship between Reiner and Crystal dates back to 1976, preceding their well-known partnership that includes the beloved film When Harry Met Sally, released in 1989. As the director, Reiner initially hesitated to cast Crystal and Meg Ryan as the leading characters, concerned that personal connections could jeopardize their performances. However, he ultimately praised Crystal’s fit for the role, acknowledging a line of humor that became iconic: “I’ll have what she’s having.”
Reiner reflected on his initial doubts in a 2019 interview and later affirmed, “I got lucky,” when discussing Crystal’s portrayal of Harry. Crystal also participated in Reiner’s earlier projects, including This Is Spinal Tap and The Princess Bride.
