A Firefighter Shares His Experience of Losing His Home in the Eaton Fire
Firefighter Faces Personal Loss Amidst Ongoing Battle Against Eaton Fire
LOS ANGELES COUNTY, Calif. – A Pasadena firefighter confronted a devastating personal loss while bravely battling the Eaton Fire, which ravaged homes across Altadena.
Firefighter Chien Yu continued his fight against the flames even after learning that his own house had succumbed to the blaze. He and his family had resided in their home for eight years. On January 7, 2025, while having dinner, Yu received an evacuation notice. Concerned for his fellow firefighters, he made the decision to leave. “What was going through my mind was that my brothers and sisters were going to need help that night,” Yu recalled. His wife and children evacuated south as he headed to work.
As part of a relentless team of firefighters, Yu spent the night on the frontline. “I just remember so much devastation, so much fire. So many homes that were on fire,” he said, emphasizing the extensive damage in the neighborhoods they worked to protect.
Upon completing his shift the next day, Yu learned that his family home was no longer standing. “I was just filled with shock. I didn’t really know what to feel,” he reflected.
Now, with the debris cleared, he and his family are on the path to rebuilding. Construction is expected to be completed by this summer, marking a hopeful turning point after a year of loss and recovery.
Yu remains humble about his role in the firefighting effort. “I think what I did that night was the easy part,” he noted. He emphasized the need for ongoing support for the Altadena community, highlighting the contributions of countless individuals who are helping to rebuild.
