Hayden Panettiere Reflects on Challenges During Her Time on the Set of ‘Nashville’ and Lack of Support from Her Team
Hayden Panettiere Reflects on Challenging Experiences in Hollywood
In a revealing interview with The Times U.K., actress Hayden Panettiere shared her experiences while filming the ABC musical drama Nashville, describing the set as unsupportive and isolating.
The conversation coincided with the release of her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, in which the former child star recounted her numerous negative experiences in Hollywood. “It’s just shocking to me how little empathy people had,” Panettiere remarked about her time on Nashville. “There were plenty of people who made the choice to not protect me.”
In her memoir, she likens the intensity of tabloid scrutiny to being “raw meat laid out for a bunch of hyenas to devour every single day.”
During the interview, Panettiere also disclosed troubling incidents from her past, including an experience during the press tour for Heroes when she was just 16. She alleged that a team member provided her with a so-called “happy pill” for an energy boost. Although she found the pills effective, she now believes they were amphetamines. “I was so used to wholeheartedly trusting the team that was around me,” she stated. “If they told me to jump, I jumped.”
Further sharing her distressing experiences, Panettiere recounted an incident where an Oscar winner exposed himself to her at an industry party. In another, she described being abandoned by a close female friend at a superyacht with a famous man who was undressed. “It was as close to being human trafficked as I have ever experienced,” she said, recalling the feeling of entrapment. “You were stuck and you realize, ‘Oh, this is why they choose to do it in places like this.’”
In addition to her past experiences, Panettiere spoke candidly about her recovery from postpartum depression and her ongoing journey towards sobriety from alcoholism and substance abuse. “It’s when I don’t have the outlet of work, it’s then I go into the ‘an idle mind is the Devil’s playground,’” she explained.
This year, Panettiere appeared in the psychological thriller Sleepwalker and expressed her desire to explore more creative avenues. “There’s so much I want to do,” she said, indicating aspirations to direct and produce. “I want to be creative.”
