Sheriff Country’s Matt Lopez Signs Overall Deal with CBS Studios, Expanding Into New Medical Franchise Projects
CBS Studios Signs Overall Deal with ‘Sheriff Country’ Showrunner Matt Lopez
Matt Lopez, the executive producer and showrunner of the CBS drama series Sheriff Country, has entered into a multi-year overall deal with CBS Studios, the studio responsible for the popular show.
As part of this agreement, Lopez will continue to lead the Fire Country spinoff while developing additional projects for the studio. Notably, this includes an untitled medical drama set in the same universe as Fire Country and Sheriff Country, which Lopez is both writing and executive producing. The project is backed by franchise co-creators Max Thieriot, Joan Rater, Tony Phelan, along with Jerry Bruckheimer and KristieAnne Reed from Jerry Bruckheimer TV.
Sheriff Country, which stars Morena Baccarin, is concluding its first season as the second highest-rated new broadcast show of the 2025-26 season, trailing only behind CBS’s Marshals. The series is averaging nearly 11 million viewers per episode across various platforms. Having already secured a renewal for a second season, the Season 1 finale is scheduled to air on May 22.
Prior to his role on Sheriff Country, Lopez served as the creator and showrunner for the ABC/Hulu drama Promised Land. His notable feature writing credits include HBO Max’s original Father of the Bride, as well as Disney films such as The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and Race to Witch Mountain. Lopez, who began his career at DreamWorks and is an alumnus of the Disney Writers Program, is represented by CAA, Lit Entertainment Group, and Lichter Grossman Nichols.
