Getting Ready: Servite and Notre Dame Athletes Compete in Division 3 Track and Field Prelims
Southern Section Prelims Set for Saturday with Focus on Division 3 at Yorba Linda
The Southern Section is gearing up for its track and field preliminaries this Saturday, taking place at four high schools. A significant spotlight will be on the Division 3 meet at Yorba Linda, where top athletes from various schools will compete.
Servite High School, known for its exceptional sprinters, and Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, which boasts a diverse group of sprinters, hurdlers, and shot put specialists, aim to qualify their best athletes in preparation for the Southern Section championships scheduled for May 16 at Moorpark High School.
“We’re trying to qualify but also build upon all our races,” said Servite coach Brandon Thomas.
Servite appears to be entering the competition in a strong position, as key athletes return from injuries. Robert Gardner, who endured a difficult season with injuries, made a notable comeback last week, clocking 10.87 seconds in the 100 meters. He will be one of four Servite runners aiming for qualification in this event. Another returning athlete, Jaelen Hunter, will compete in the 400 meters.
At Notre Dame, Brayden Borquez rebounded from a fall at the Arcadia Invitational to secure victory in the 110 hurdles at the Mission League finals last week. Additionally, JJ Harel, the defending state champion in the high jump, is preparing to compete in the long jump and triple jump.
Meanwhile, outside Yorba Linda, opponents of transgender athlete AB Hernandez, who competes for Jurupa Valley, are planning to hold a news conference to protest her participation.
Other finals will take place at Trabuco Hills (Division 1), Ontario (Division 2), and Carpinteria (Division 4).
