Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Shares Why He Chose to Step Back from the ‘Furiosa’ Role to Prioritize Rest
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Prioritizes Rest Over ‘Furiosa’ Role
Emmy Award-winning actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II recently stepped away from George Miller’s anticipated Mad Max follow-up, Furiosa, emphasizing the importance of honesty and self-care in his decision. During an interview with Josh Horowitz on Happy Sad Confused, Abdul-Mateen II revealed that his relentless shooting schedule led him to choose rest over participating in the action-thriller.
Reflecting on his journey since graduating from the Yale School of Drama in 2015, Abdul-Mateen II recounted the whirlwind of projects that followed his breakout role in 2016’s The Get Down. He described a hectic schedule, moving from Baywatch to The Greatest Showman, and further projects across various locations, including Handmaid’s Tale, Watchmen, and Trial of the Chicago 7. His tireless work culminated in exhaustion by 2021, just as he was about to film Aquaman 2.
Abdul-Mateen II acknowledged the demanding pace of his career, stating, “I won’t call them champagne problems, but these are gifts, these are blessings the entire way, but it did come with something else which was me just being very, very tired.” He highlighted the shifts in how the world viewed him as he gained prominence, noting his need to adjust both personally and professionally.
Despite praising Miller for his proactive approach to involving actors in the creative process, Abdul-Mateen II realized he could not commit to the role without compromising his well-being. “I knew deep down inside that it was too much and that I needed to rest,” he said. He expressed gratitude for having handled the situation honestly, allowing another actor to step in while giving him the opportunity to rejuvenate.
In addition to Wonder Man Season 2, Abdul-Mateen II has several upcoming projects lined up, including Liminal, House of Games, The Adventures of Cliff Booth, and By Any Means. He was also featured recently in Netflix’s thriller series Man on Fire.
