Filming Begins on Jeff Nichols’ King Snake; Stacey Snider Describes Gothic Horror as Surprising and Unique
EXCLUSIVE: Filming has commenced in Arkansas on Jeff Nichols’ Southern gothic thriller King Snake, featuring Margaret Qualley (The Substance), Drew Starkey (Queer), and Michael Shannon (Take Shelter).
The supernatural horror film centers on a young couple, played by Qualley and Starkey, who inherit a rural Arkansas farm. As they confront both physical and metaphysical demons tied to its legacy, they must navigate a world where forces of good and evil converge, blending real-world challenges with haunting creatures and myths.
Nichols, known for films like Loving and Mud, is producing King Snake in collaboration with his partners at Tri-State Pictures, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Sarah Green, and has partnered with Range Media Partners for the production. FilmNation is financing the project and managing worldwide sales.
This film marks a reunion for Nichols and FilmNation, following collaborations on Mud and Take Shelter. It is also the first project under FilmNation’s new Chief Creative Officer, Stacey Snider. Snider, who previously led 20th Century Fox, DreamWorks, and Universal Pictures, expressed excitement about the project, stating, “Jeff’s startling new vision of supernatural forces is as extraordinary as it is enthralling, and we can’t wait for this incredible story to bewitch and captivate audiences around the world.”
Nichols also remarked on the collaboration with FilmNation, noting the company’s significant role in his career. He stated, “My films have embraced genre in the past, but I hope to push this approach further with King Snake to create something terrifying and beautiful. Making films is a privilege, and our team is working to create a piece of cinema worthy of FilmNation’s continued support.”
Upcoming FilmNation productions include Olivia Wilde’s Sundance hit The Invite and the series adaptation of Isabel Allende’s The House of the Spirits for Prime Video.
