Cannes Directors’ Fortnight Welcomes Bruno Dumont’s ‘Red Rocks’ and New Masterclass Opportunities
Bruno Dumont’s Red Rocks, described as a modern take on the classic love story of Romeo and Juliet set against the backdrop of the French Riviera, has officially been included in the 2026 lineup for Cannes’ Directors Fortnight.
The film will be showcased as a special screening during the 58th edition of the parallel section, which runs from May 13 to 23. Dumont is also scheduled to conduct a masterclass following the screening.
Dumont first graced the Cannes stage in Directors’ Fortnight back in 1997 with The Life of Jesus, which received a special mention for the Caméra d’Or prize, recognizing remarkable debut films from both the Official Selection and parallel sections.
In 2014, the section showcased his four-part miniseries, Li’l Quinquin, and he returned in 2017 with his musical film Jeannette, the Childhood of Joan of Arc.
Dumont’s body of work has consistently garnered attention at the Official Selection, with films like Humanity and Flanders winning the Grand Jury Prize in 1999 and 2006, respectively. His other works, such as Slack Bay and France, have also competed for the prestigious Palme d’Or.
Directors’ Fortnight representatives note that Red Rocks signifies a new direction in Dumont’s filmmaking style. “Shot in the French Riviera with very young children, the film adopts a documentary-like approach, utilizing wide-angle lenses. Once again, Dumont explores the grace that can emerge from cinema,” they stated.
Red Rocks joins one of the most distinguished editions of Directors’ Fortnight in recent years.
The 58th edition of Directors’ Fortnight will open with Kantemir Balagov’s drama Butterfly Jam, set in New Jersey and featuring performances by Barry Keoghan and Riley Keough.
Additional selections include Reed Van Dyk’s drama Atonement, featuring Kenneth Branagh, Hiam Abbass, and Boyd Holbrook; Arie Esiri and Chuko Esiri’s reimagining of Mrs. Dalloway, titled Clarissa, with Sophie Okonedo, David Oyelowo, and Ayo Edebiri; and July Jung’s film Dora, starring Japanese actress Sakura Ando and K-pop star Kim Do-yeon.
