Meet Zoe, the Adorable ‘Puff Kitty’ Looking for a Loving Home at Palm Springs Animal Shelter
Kitten with Unique Condition Available for Adoption at Palm Springs Animal Shelter
A kitten that recently captured media attention due to a rare condition resembling an inflated balloon is now up for adoption at the Palm Springs Animal Shelter. The feline, named Zoe, was brought to the shelter in March, suffering from subcutaneous emphysema—a condition that left her body appearing swollen due to excess air trapped under her skin.
Dr. Phil Caldwell, the shelter’s medical director, explained on social media that Zoe’s condition may have resulted from trauma to her airways, allowing air to escape into unintended areas. The cause of this trauma has not been determined.
To address Zoe’s condition, Dr. Caldwell performed a procedure to relieve the excess air by inserting a needle into her neck, chest, and back. After several weeks of recovery, Zoe has since returned to good health and is ready for adoption.
Zoe has gained a fan base online, with affectionate nicknames like "Puff Kitty" and "Mrs. Puff." As of Wednesday, she is available for adoption until 5 p.m. on Sunday, with an adoption fee set at $500. This fee is part of the Adoption Heroes Program, which helps support the care of other animals at the shelter. A potential adopter will be selected and notified on Tuesday.
“Based on what we know of her wants and needs, we will choose the perfect home for her,” Dr. Caldwell stated.
