Sean Combs’ $100 Million Defamation Case Against NBCU Dismissed

Sean “Diddy” Combs received disappointing news on Wednesday as a New York judge dismissed his $100 million defamation lawsuit against NBCUniversal. This ruling comes as Combs waits for a decision from a panel of U.S. Court of Appeals judges regarding his ongoing criminal case.

Judge Phaedra F. Perry-Bond of the Empire State Supreme Court not only dismissed the lawsuit, which Combs filed on February 25, 2025, but she also criticized its foundation. The judge stated that the documentary *Diddy: The Making of a Bad Boy*, which aired on NBCU’s Peacock platform, could not have further damaged Combs’s reputation, describing it as already “tarnished by the numerous lawsuits, domestic violence video, press coverage, and a criminal indictment prior to the Documentary’s publication.”

The documentary, which debuted on January 14, 2025, less than six months after Combs’s arrest and indictment on federal charges of racketeering, sex trafficking, and prostitution, detailed allegations of violence and sexual abuse spanning decades. This extensive media coverage contributed to a narrative about Combs that many argued was not new information.

The documentary also delved into the controversial aspects of Combs’ life, including his alleged involvement in the deaths of Notorious B.I.G. and Kim Porter, his long-time girlfriend and mother of some of his children.

Combs’ legal team claimed that the documentary’s premise suggested he had committed serious crimes, labeling him a “monster” and comparing him to figures like Jeffrey Epstein. However, Judge Perry-Bond rejected these assertions, emphasizing that Combs and his legal representatives failed to demonstrate any significant reputational harm.

In her ruling, Judge Perry-Bond described the film as “carefully curated and nuanced,” highlighting the inclusion of interviewee biases and counterstatements to the allegedly defamatory comments.

In a parallel development, Combs is currently serving a four-year prison sentence after being convicted on charges related to prostitution. He is set to be released on April 15, 2028, having been acquitted of more serious charges such as racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking, which could have resulted in a life sentence.

Combs’ legal issues continue to unfold. On April 9, his attorney, Alexandra Shapiro, presented arguments at the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the Second District, asserting that U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian had improperly considered acquitted charges during Combs’s sentencing. The panel of three judges has yet to announce their decision regarding the appeal.

Amidst these legal battles, Combs has also sought a pardon from former President Donald Trump and has hinted at potential lawsuits against Netflix and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson regarding a series titled *Sean Combs: The Reckoning*. However, these threats appear to have dwindled alongside the dismissal of his NBCUniversal lawsuit.
