Curry Barker to Direct and Write New A24 Texas Chainsaw Massacre Film
In a notable development for the horror genre, A24 has secured the feature rights to a reimagined version of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which will be directed and written by Curry Barker, known for his film Obsession.
This new project is distinct from the A24 television series currently in development, led by JT Mollner, with producers Glen Powell and Dan Cohen at Barnstorm.
Barker, whose background includes crafting horror films for YouTube, has gained significant attention following the acquisition of his title Obsession by Focus Features for over $15 million. The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, explores a toxic relationship between a young couple that spirals after one makes a wish for greater love. Obsession is set to hit theaters on May 15.
The producers for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre project are Roy Lee and Steven Schneider of Spooky Pictures, alongside Stuart Manashil and Exurbia Films’ Pat Cassidy, Ian Henkel, and Kim Henkel. Ben Ross of Image Nation will serve as executive producer. The franchise originated with the 1974 classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, created by Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel, featuring Gunnar Hansen as the infamous Leatherface.
Variety was the first to report Curry Barker’s involvement with this latest installment of the beloved horror franchise.
