Angels Face Tough Challenge Against Padres in Loss at Home
Padres Defeat Angels 4-1 Behind Strong Performances from Laureano and Tatis
In a notable showing on Saturday night, the San Diego Padres secured a 4-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels, with Ramón Laureano and Fernando Tatis Jr. each contributing two runs. Germán Márquez delivered a standout performance, throwing 5 2/3 scoreless innings.
Adrian Morejon (2-0) earned the win, striking out two batters in 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, while Mason Miller achieved his seventh save despite allowing a single and a walk in the ninth inning. Miller’s performance this season has been impressive, with two hits and two walks alongside 25 strikeouts over 10 1/3 innings. His scoreless streak has now reached 31 2/3 innings, dating back to August 6 of the previous year.
The teams were locked in a scoreless tie until the eighth inning when Freddy Fermin and Jake Cronenworth drew walks from Ryan Zeferjahn (1-1). Laureano broke the deadlock with an RBI single, marking the end of San Diego’s 16-inning scoring drought. Tatis followed suit with an RBI hit-and-run that rolled through an open spot at second base, extending the lead to 2-0.
The Angels responded in the bottom of the eighth, narrowing the gap to 2-1. Singles from Logan O’Hoppe and Adam Frazier set the stage for Nolan Schanuel, who delivered a two-out RBI single. However, Jo Adell’s groundout ended the inning and prevented further scoring.
In the ninth inning, the Padres increased their lead to 4-1 with Laureano’s sacrifice fly and Tatis’ subsequent RBI single. Márquez, who surrendered just two hits, struck out five batters, all in the fourth and fifth innings, and issued two walks. On the opposing side, Angels starter Yusei Kikuchi allowed four hits, struck out eight, and walked one over six innings.
Notable defensive plays included Jackson Merrill’s impressive leaping catch at the right-center-field wall, robbing Yoán Moncada of a potential home run in the second inning, despite a collision with Tatis.
The game experienced two delays; one came when O’Hoppe took a foul tip to the neck, while the other occurred after a 96-mph fastball grazed Cronenworth’s chin. Both players remained in the game to continue their contributions.
Looking ahead, the series finale is set for Sunday, where Padres right-hander Michael King (2-1, 2.78 ERA) will face Angels left-hander Reid Detmers (1-1, 3.57 ERA).
