Luka Doncic Can Compete for NBA Postseason Awards After League Decision
Luka Doncic Eligible for Postseason Awards Following Ruling on Appeal
Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic will be eligible for postseason awards after the NBA and the NBA Players Association (NBPA) announced a favorable ruling for him regarding the 65-game eligibility rule. This decision was made public on Thursday.
Doncic, a frontrunner for the Most Valuable Player award and a near certainty for his sixth All-NBA selection, played in only 64 games this season due to a left hamstring injury he sustained on April 2. According to the latest collective bargaining agreement, players must appear in a minimum of 65 games to qualify for postseason honors. However, Doncic successfully appealed under the extraordinary circumstances clause of the agreement, alongside Detroit Pistons star Cade Cunningham.
Doncic’s absence from two games in December was due to the birth of his daughter in Slovenia. In contrast, Cunningham missed 12 games after suffering a collapsed lung on March 17.
This season, Doncic captured his second scoring title with an impressive average of 33.5 points per game. He regained momentum in the MVP race with a remarkable March, becoming only the second player, alongside Michael Jordan, to score 600 points in that month. His performance included four straight games with 40 or more points and 12 games with 30 points or more, prior to his injury on April 2.
As the playoffs approach, Doncic, along with guard Austin Reaves, who is sidelined with an oblique injury, will be out indefinitely. The Lakers are set to begin their playoff campaign on Saturday against the Houston Rockets.
