Selma Blair Shares Her Thoughts on the 25th Anniversary of ‘Legally Blonde’ and What It Means Today
Ahead of the 25th anniversary of Legally Blonde, actress Selma Blair reflects on her journey through memorable red carpet moments during the film’s promotional events.
In an exclusive interview, Blair expressed her personal approach to fashion at the time, stating, “I remember styling myself only, like, it never occurred to me to have a stylist.” The 53-year-old actress recalled browsing stores and selecting outfits on her own, adding, “It was just a different time.” She noted how her perspective evolved, saying, “I realized five years later, I need makeup.”
At the Los Angeles premiere of Legally Blonde in June 2001, Blair captured attention in a red and navy striped halter dress. She later wore a black Ralph Lauren dress at the film’s Southampton premiere the following month.
Blair acknowledged the dramatic shifts in the fashion landscape since then, remarking, “Everyone has a stylist. Crazy. You don’t even get to keep the clothes.” She emphasized the high cost of designer gowns, indicating that a stylist is now a necessity for many.
Reflecting on her time on set, Blair revealed, “I hung on a long time to my wardrobe from Legally Blonde and Sweetest Thing,” but admitted to giving away most of her collection over the years to fans and young people she met. “I have one beret that’s like, beaded, but it’s fine,” she said, humorously noting, “I have moths every once in a while in my closet, so it’s just as well.”
In her current life, one wardrobe staple for Blair includes a bed jacket. She has recently collaborated with Kansas City-based lifestyle brand MERSEA to create a limited-edition pajama capsule collection titled Sea La Vie. This line aims to celebrate sleepwear as a modern self-care ritual. “Bed is something that I’m in a lot,” Blair remarked, expressing her joy over the new collection.
Blair’s design journey also carries sentimental value, as expressed in her tribute to her mother. “I inherited these bed jackets when I was little from all her pregnancies,” she explained, recalling a fond memory of wearing one on a special night out in New York City.
The collection, which launched on April 14, features two colorways, “Starry Navy” and “Ballet Pink,” along with various other coordinated pieces. Blair revealed that 10 percent of the profits will support the American Brain Foundation, where she has taken on the role of Global Ambassador and National Chair for Brain Health.
