Weekend Weather Update: Expect Rain and Possible Thunderstorms
Rain Forecast for Southland This Weekend
Rain is anticipated across much of the Southland this weekend, bringing inclement weather to several areas overnight.
According to the National Weather Service, Saturday will remain primarily dry with cooler temperatures, but moderate rain and a chance of thunderstorms are expected to move into the region Saturday night into Sunday morning.
Scattered showers may continue from Sunday afternoon into Monday morning, with dry and warmer conditions forecast for the remainder of next week. Rainfall amounts through Sunday night are projected to range from half an inch to 1.5 inches, with higher totals of around 2 inches in the foothills and mountains. Rainfall rates could reach up to a half-inch per hour. Forecasters indicated that while minor nuisance flooding is likely, significant flooding and debris flows are not expected.
Should thunderstorms develop, they may produce brief heavy rain, gusty winds, small hail, and even the potential for waterspouts or short-lived tornadoes. The main weather front is expected to pass through Los Angeles County between early and mid-morning Sunday.
Snow levels are forecasted to be around 7,000 feet through Sunday morning, dropping to approximately 5,000 feet Sunday afternoon into early Monday. A winter weather advisory has been issued from 3 a.m. Sunday through 11 a.m. Monday for the Interstate 5 Corridor, Acton, the San Gabriel Mountains, and the Highway 14 Corridor.
In addition, strong winds are predicted in the Antelope Valley, with gusts reaching up to 45 mph on Sunday. A wind advisory was issued Saturday afternoon along Highway 14, from Ward Road to the Los Angeles/Kern County line, urging caution for drivers of high-profile vehicles, campers, and trailers.
Temperatures in Los Angeles County are set to decline over the next few days, with highs in the mid-60s for Sunday and Monday, before a slight warming trend begins later in the week. Overnight lows will range from the upper 40s to lower 50s throughout the county.
