Burbank Police Investigate Woman for Alleged Arson at Department Store
Burbank Department Store Fire Results in Arrest and Significant Damage
A woman has been arrested in connection with an intentionally set fire at a department store in Burbank this past weekend, authorities reported Thursday.
The fire broke out around 11 p.m. on Sunday in the 1800 block of Empire Avenue, according to the Burbank Police Department. The quick response of firefighters from the Burbank Fire Department prompted the evacuation of customers and employees as they worked to extinguish the blaze.
Investigators revealed that the fire originated in the bedding section of the store, with no one present in the vicinity besides the suspect. Police noted that no accidental sources of ignition were discovered.
On Monday, 27-year-old Stephanie Irene Mendoza of San Fernando was arrested at a nearby hotel. She now faces a felony arson charge.
The fire caused extensive structural damage, smoke contamination, and significant merchandise loss, estimated to be in the millions of dollars. As a result, the store remains closed for repairs.
