Sarah McLachlan Performs in LA at The Orpheum: A Celebration of ‘Better Broken’
Sarah McLachlan Releases New Album and Embarks on U.S. Tour
Los Angeles, CA — Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan has recently released her first album in nearly a decade, titled "Better Broken." The album comes at a time when musicians over 50 continue to produce exceptional work, showcasing a blend of experience and artistry.
McLachlan, who turned 57 this year, is currently on a nine-day tour across the United States, stopping at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles on Saturday, November 29. Known for founding the celebrated Lilith Fair, which promoted female artists in the late ’90s, McLachlan’s latest music is being compared to her seminal 1993 album, "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy."
The tour commenced in Philadelphia on November 17, where McLachlan opened her performance with the title track of her new album. With a heartfelt solo piano rendition, she explored themes of relationships and emotional resilience. In contrast to the poignant tones of "Better Broken," the album also features the lively rocker "One in a Long Line," co-written with Anne Preven, formerly of Ednaswap. "That was the last song written for my album," McLachlan shared. "Sometimes the best songs on an album are the last to be added."
This album marks McLachlan’s first collection of original material since the introspective "Shine On," which was shaped by personal loss and transition. The new tracks are characterized by warmth and confidence, supported by a talented lineup of musicians including drummer Matt Chamberlain and pianist Benny Bock. McLachlan’s ability to navigate personal challenges while finding hope resonates powerfully throughout the album.
During her Philadelphia performance, McLachlan balanced new songs with fan favorites like the soaring "Sweet Surrender." Despite the risks associated with introducing fresh material, the audience remained fully engaged, reflecting a strong connection between McLachlan and her fans.
A portion of ticket sales from McLachlan’s shows is directed toward The Sarah McLachlan School of Music, an initiative she founded in 2002 to provide music education to underprivileged children. Since its inception, the program has expanded throughout Canada, offering lessons to 1,754 students in the 2024/2025 school year.
Beyond her musical contributions, McLachlan is known for her philanthropic endeavors, particularly her support for animal welfare and education. Her partnership with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has significantly raised awareness and funds, amassing $30 million since she began her campaign in 2006.
"I’ve always tried to help whenever I can," McLachlan said. "I have so much, and it’s very important for me to give back."
As she continues to evolve as both an artist and philanthropist, McLachlan remains a significant figure in contemporary music, delighting audiences with her enduring talent and commitment to social causes.
